Twisted Extrovert Introvert

Bridge House Art

“Twisted, extrovert, introvert” is a project where I explored how 3D shapes could change the caricature of 2D portraitures.

Twisted Extrovert Introvert

This is a gallery exhibition piece where I used antaglio printmaking to create four identical portraitures of a selection of people.

I had identified four different characters I wanted to express and the shapes that best represented that character.

Flat normal looking was the control, so anyone could see them.

“Extrovert” where they would be shaped outward and round-looking, meaning anyone could see them from any angle.

“Twisted” where they were folded into a shape, giving them a cross-eyed look - making their character difficult to decipher.

“Introverted” where they were folded in and closed off inside themselves, only being seen from one angle.

Another aim of this project was to avoid people glancing and walking away.  I wanted the public to be engaged and be interested. The solution was to design for visual interaction with the work. Without being prompted to, the 3D nature of the work meant people would explore around, over top, underneath, inside and naturally compare  on the differences between the shapes.  It was not possible to take a quick glance and walk away.

Overall, I was successful in my aims. Over the month-long public exhibition I observed the public interact in the way I intended and compare the different characters hidden within.
